Next time you find yourself in the vicinity of Sun Valley, Idaho, do yourself a favor and seek out The Wrangler, home of the Snow Bunny Burger. Located in Fairfield, just a few miles south of the touristy valley, this former drive-inn still serves up a great burger.
All burgers are 100% beef 1/4-pound patties, individually cooked to order by a down-home mother-daughter team. Want pink in the middle? No problem. All you have to do is ask. Try the namesake Snow Bunny Burger ($3.49), a single patty topped with 2 slices smoked ham, Swiss cheese, shredded lettuce, and secret sauce on a lightly toasted bun. The combination of flavors really works here. For a variation on the theme, try the Powder Pig Burger ($4.29) topped with bacon instead of ham or the Roadkill Patty Melt ($3.45).
Beer-battered onion rings area mandatory side. These traditional favorites are light and crispy and rise to new heights when dipped in The Wrangler’s famous fry sauce (a secret combination of ketchup, mayonnaise, and Lawry’s seasoning salt) made even better when doctored with a few generous shakes of Tabasco. For sides beyond the onion rings, try the mac & cheese bits (5/$1.59), sister snack to the tater tot.
Don’t leave without taking special note of the adorable Snow Bunny, whose handpainted mural has smiled down on this tiny burger joint since 1990.
