The Garage Steakhouse is cool! Looking just like Fonzie’s repair garage from the Happy Days era, this little restaurant is decked out with old oil drums, neon signs, car posters, spark plug adverts, and even a big salad bar sitting on a hydraulic car hoist. You don’t have to be a car buff to appreciate it, since it is just plain fun to be here.
On any given day, the place could be filled with local ranchers or members of the Women’s Beef Council... maybe even an occasional tourist, but probably not, since Bridger is off the beaten track. Even so, The Garage Steakhouse, located just a 40-minute scenic drive east of Red Lodge, Montana, is well worth going out of your way for. And often.
Fitting in with the garage theme, menu items feature great car and auto accessory names. Under Accessories, check out the Wing Nuts (a pound of spicy chicken wings, $5.95) or the Cackel-lytic Converters (spicy chicken gizzards with your choice of dressing, $5.95). If you have never had gizzards, give them a try. They are different, and a bit chewy, but real popular. Most locals can rip through a one-pound basket with no problem!
Sandwiches fall under the heading of Tires and Brakes and come fully equipped with your choice of Piston Rings (onion rings) or four kinds of fries. The big VW Reuben ($6.25) is made of homemade corned beef and sauerkraut, while the Jeep ($6.25) is a half-pound patty melt on rye with a mess of grilled onions and cheese. Get ’em cooked any way you like, and nobody will holler if you ask for it rare.
The burgers ($5.95-$6.50) are real popular, come in half- or third-pound, and have cool names like Corvette and BMW. If you tire of looking at all the varieties, just ask the gals for your heart’s desire, and they will fix you up right. It’s Montana, after all.
And don’t forget the milkshakes. Made from real ice cream—thick and luscious. Even on a cold winter’s day, they go down so good! Ask for a peanut butter shake, and it may be one of the grandest experiences of your dining life. It was mine! And, they still come with a cherry stuck on top.
After your meal, head out to the nearby Pryor Mountains, where, if you are lucky, you can still see bands of wild Mustangs roaming the open range. Then, come right back for dinner. And another shake! To go....
