Most people don’t usually visit a bar just to eat, let alone have breakfast. But the Sunset Lounge, in Escondido, California, serves up mighty fine breakfast and lunch fare. There is a small patio out front, where you can sit and eat in unhurried relaxation. And the service is simply delightful!
Tending the tiny kitchen, is Dave, a great guy who has been chef in some of the most high caliber resorts in the world. Now in semi-retirement, he likes to serve up a mean meal in this small venue. Don’t let the size of the kitchen fool you. Dave can fit a lot of ingredients into a small space, and it all turns out great!
Breakfast is only served on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so don’t miss out. Try the French toast ($4.95) which tastes like hot donuts, or one of Dave’s ever-changing specials, like teriyaki steak and eggs ($6.50). The specials may reflect ingredients left over from weekday lunches, like the machaca and eggs ($6.50) made of hand-shredded leftover steak.
Check out the specials board, but don’t hesitate to ask for an item not on the menu. Dave will likely give you a big smile and get to work on your order. For example the patty melt, ($4.50) is not on the menu, but is simply to die for! It includes a pile of grilled onions, a thick burger patty, and cheese, all stuffed between slices of grilled rye bread. Like all the burgers served at the Sunset, this is a hand-formed beef patty made from beef slaughtered and ground just up the road at Talones Custom Slaughterhouse. That’s fresh! Ask for it done medium rare, and Dave will cook you one pink and juicy burger. Delicious!
If you are on a budget, try the half-order of biscuits and gravy for two dollars, or go whole hog and get a full order for $3.50. Can’t beat that. Drink specials usually include Bloody Marys or mimosas for three or four bucks, and the coffee is plentiful and hot. Plan to spend some time before eating, just hanging out with the staff or meeting some of the locals who are regulars. Or better yet, ask Dave for a little of his personal history. He’s had some real adventures!
